Designing the new Ultimate

Canyon engineer, Lukas Birr, explains the design and development process that went into creating the Ultimate; a road bike that delivers the perfect balance. Lightweight, stiff and aerodynamic. This is our classic road race bike, evolved.

High-end carbon layup

To make a frame with a class-leading stiffness-to-weight ratio, you need to use an advanced mix of carbon fibre materials. We precisely optimised the frame’s wall thickness and chose the exact fibres required for incredible stiffness and huge strength.

A versatile, adjustable carbon cockpit

Our groundbreaking CP0048 Aerocockpit puts a range of gear integration options and fit adjustments, all with no cutting required. You can adjust the width by 50 mm without cutting the brake hoses, and the height by 20 mm without cutting the fork steerer tube. Plus, the new Gear Groove interface provides a solid platform for mounting a range of accessories quickly, from aero bars to computer mounts (available separately).

PACE - Performance Adaptive Cockpit Ecosystem

From more upright and comfortable to low and aero, switch between cockpit setups in minutes using the Ultimate's interchangeable drops. As standard, the Ultimate uses the more balanced Classic Drops – with narrower Aero Drops available as an aftermarket extra for a slammed, compact, pro-inspired riding position with a longer effective reach.

Aerodynamically optimised

On the road, from just 14 kph, aerodynamic drag is the largest force holding you back. So we optimised the frame forms for minimum drag, through an exhaustive process of wind tunnel testing in collaboration with aero experts Swiss Side. We also integrated the headtube/fork area as much as possible for extra aero gains.

A beautifully refined aero carbon seatpost

The Ultimate looks even cleaner and sleeker with this clamp design. The clamp is hidden away in the seat tube, so there’s no extra drag. We combine it with a D-shaped seatpost to reduce air resistance in the seat tube area to an absolute minimum. Plus, it’s also simple to adjust so you can easily find your perfect riding position thanks to independent setback and tilt adjustment.

Bike classification

Bikes of this category are designed for riding on hard-surface roads where the wheels remain in permanent contact to the ground. These are in general road racing bicycles with racing handlebars or straight handlebars, triathlon or time trial bicycles. The permissible maximum overall weight comprising rider, luggage and bicycle should not exceed 120 kg. Under certain circumstances this permissible maximum weight can be further limited by the component manufacturers’ recommendations for use. Proven cyclocross and gravel bikes with racing handlebars and cantilever or disc brakes are a special case in this category. In addition, these bikes are also suitable for gravel paths and off-road trails where a short loss of tyre contact with the ground due to small stairs or steps at a height of 15 to 20 cm can occur.
