An assembly of parts brought together to reward hard efforts and fast riding — a great road bike is a work of art. And while the beauty of some features and components is obvious, a cutting edge aerodynamic carbon frame or a lightweight fast rolling wheelset for example, others are more subtle, like the individual elements of a finely-tuned groupset.

Collectively a groupset is greater than the sum of its parts, engineered to turn power into forward motion. In this article, we dive deep into the world of Shimano vs SRAM road bike groupsets and the components we use on Canyon’s road bikes. What is a road bike groupset?

A collection of precision-engineered parts working together, groupset is the umbrella for the workhorse components that define everything from your bike’s shift quality and braking confidence to weight, maintenance and overall riding experience. 

If you imagine the main silhouette of your bike’s profile: frame, wheels, seatpost, saddle handlebars, the groupset is everything in between. The systems responsible for efficient power transfer and reliable stopping. 

Why road bike groupsets matter for your ride

Together a groupset is one of the most influential factors in how any bike performs. Understanding the ins-and-outs of modern groupsets then is a vital part of choosing the right bike to match your cycling goals.

With road racing being cycling’s flagship discipline since the 19th century, and a huge injection of cash into the professional road racing circuit over the years, todays’ road groupsets are engineered with a huge amount of innovation, targeting the following performance factors:

  • Shifting precision: How cleanly and quickly gears change under load
  • Braking power: Stopping control on varied terrain and conditions
  • Gear range: Available ratios for climbing steep gradients and maintaining speed
  • Durability: Resistance to dirt, debris, and weather exposure 
  • Weight: Impact on overall bike performance and handling

Tuned specifically for the demands of riding and racing drop bar bikes on tarmac, road groupsets include lightweight components, smooth, fast shifting and a large gear range with small incremental steps between them.

Main components of a road bike groupset

So what are those specific components? While packages vary somewhat to include things like bottom brackets and battery packs, the main components across all road bike groupsets include:

  • Crankset: The crank arms and chainrings that transfer your pedalling force
  • Chain and cassette: Connect the front chainring to rear sprockets determining gear selection
  • Derailleurs: Front and rear mechanisms that move the chain up and down between gears
  • Shifters: Controls integrated with brake levers for gear changes
  • Brake system: Levers and callipers, typically disc brakes on modern bikes.

Road bike groupset brands and options

When it comes to groupset components, two names dominate the road: SRAM and Shimano. Both produce exceptional components that perform brilliantly when matched to the right rider and terrain. So while each has its loyal following — riders who swear solely by one brand — the key is knowing which best suits you.

Shimano road groupsets explained

Synonymous with bicycle components since 1922, Shimano has produced countless iterations of components for road, mountain and gravel biking. Components that are famed for their durability and reliable performance.

Typically, Shimano uses more conventional setups. Their 2x (double chainring) drivetrains dominate road cycling, often paired with 11 or 12 speed cassettes with traditional jumps between gears. Their shifters are engaged using two paddles on each lever associated with front and rear derailleurs, the same is true for their Di2 shifters, but with buttons replacing mechanical paddles.

Shimano’s cranksets uses a hollow aluminium crank arm formed from two bonded pieces, delivering a stiff, lightweight and durable crank, and feature on bike builds across Canyon’s road range from the Endurance Young Hero and entry-level road bikes, all the way through to the top-flight CFR bikes.

SRAM road groupsets explained

Bursting onto the scene in 1987, SRAM pioneered the 1x setup for drop-bar bikes and, for a wider overall gear range, their cassettes tend to start with a 10-tooth cog, rather than the 11-tooth used by Shimano.

SRAM shifters use DoubleTap technology, where the shift depends on how far the paddle is pushed. All the way moves the chain up the cassette, while half-way moves it down. On SRAM electronic groupsets, a button on the left shifter moves the chain up the cassette and the right side moves it down. For 2x road drivetrains, pressing both simultaneously shifts between the chainrings.

Prioritising low weight and high performance, SRAM’s top-end cranks are built with carbon fibre which we build many of our mid and top-range road bikes with including the Aeroad CF SLX 9 AXS, for instance.

Shimano vs SRAM: How to choose the right road groupset

Experienced riders, used to the feel of one brand or the other, will likely be comfortable sticking with what they know. And alongside tactile variations in shape and feel, there are noticeable differences between Shimano and SRAM when it comes to operation.  

For our entry-level road bikes, the bomb-proof durability of Shimano’s more accessible groupsets is hard to beat. Generally speaking, more money will get you more gear options and a lighter, smoother setup regardless of which you choose. But keep in mind that parts like cassettes and chains will wear and need replacing and so the upkeep costs should also be a factor to consider.  

Mechanical vs electronic groupsets for road bikes

Once reserved only for top-flight bikes, for many riders the modern rise of electronic shifting has totally transformed the experience of changing gears.

Triggered by the pull of a cable, mechanical gear shifts offer a familiar, hands-on feel whilst being reliable, easy to maintain, and straightforward to fix. Electronic systems however are activated by an electrical signal to deliver fast, precise shifts with minimal effort. There’s no cables to stretch or wear, making for consistent accurate performance with a simple and effortless tap of a button.

1x vs 2x drivetrains for road bikes 

One of the deciding factors in choosing your groupset is a single or double chainset.

Much more commonly used on the road, a 2x drivetrain offers a wider selection of gears and higher top speeds, great for riders seeking precise cadence control on fast or competitive rides.

By contrast, 1x systems simplify shifting, reduce mechanical complexity, with more of a focus on lighter gears, making it a great option for riders looking to mix surfaces on a range of different rides.

Shimano offers a wide range of road bike groupsets, from beginner-friendly options to professional-level race equipment. Understanding where each groupset sits in the hierarchy can help you choose the right balance of performance, features and value for your riding needs.

Groupsets: Description:
Dura-Ace Di2: Built for the professional peloton, this is the absolute pinnacle of Shimano's engineering, featuring a semi-wireless 12-speed electronic setup (Di2) utilising lightweight materials for zero-compromise shifting and the lowest possible weight.
Ultegra Di2: The sweet spot for most competitive amateurs, the latest range of Ultegra mirrors Dura-Ace’s 12-speed electronic architecture. The key difference is that slightly heavier, cheaper materials make it much more affordable.
105 mechanical and Di2: The ultimate workhorse for club riders and enthusiasts, featuring 12-speed technology available in both a mechanical and semi-wireless electronic (Di2) option.
Tiagra: A robust, 10-speed mechanical groupset that represents the entry point into performance road cycling.
CUES: A modern entry-level and recreational groupset platform, designed around durability, simplicity, and value for road, gravel, hybrid, and commuter bikes.
Sora: A dependable 9-speed mechanical groupset built with heavier steel and aluminium components to offer maximum durability and easy maintenance.
