Championship-winning mountain bikes are a special breed. To win at the highest of levels, you need a machine designed for elite racing. From the frame construction to the suspension design, the geometry to the components, it all needs to work together as a seamless package to give you the edge on the competition.

What separates a race-winning MTB from the rest?

Great athletes are always looking for an advantage. Even the most physically gifted are always looking for that extra fraction of a percentage to help them stay ahead of their competitors. Whether it’s training protocols, nutrition or materials, their search for speed never ends. To win a championship means to be consistently fast, week-in and week-out, and for that, you need a bike built to perform.

It’s not enough to take an existing frame and hang shiny components from it; race-winning bikes need to be designed from the ground up:

  • you need to choose the right frame material and shape it meticulously to create the right profile for weight, strength and stiffness;
  • the geometry needs to be at the cutting edge;
  • the suspension needs to be tailored to the style of racing;
  • the components need to be chosen to create a bike that is greater than the sum of its parts.

It is nothing less than the quest for perfection.

The demands of modern mountain bike racing 

Mountain bike racing is evolving every year. Speeds are going up in both downhill and cross-country, which means that the demands on the bikes are greater than ever. Gone are the days when you could hope to win a cross-country race on a bike setup solely for the climbs. As courses get more technical, the racing is now fought over the whole course, and you need a race bike that is not just light and efficient, but durable and aggressive enough to compete on the descents, too. 

In downhill, races are won by ever-finer margins, and riders are getting closer to the 100k/h mark on course, pushing the limits of traction and bike control further than ever. To keep up, you are going to need a bike built for the modern sport. No matter which discipline you choose, competing on a race bike from even just a few years ago is going to put you at a disadvantage as the quest for racing speed forges ever onwards.

Matching your bike to your racing discipline 

To put yourself at the sharp end of the racing, you need the right bike for the discipline you choose.

Cross-country and marathon racing: Prioritising pure speed 

You are not going to be anywhere near the sharp end of a cross-country race without a bike that is very light and extremely efficient. What has changed in the sport is that race bikes now need to do this and perform downhill as well. The latest generation of cross-country bikes still let you put down a ruthless amount of power. What is new is that geometry advances, combined with increased suspension travel and modern suspension designs, deliver that power and put you in a more commanding position to tear up the descents at the same time. With this combination of endless up and downhill speed, modern cross-country racing is faster than ever. 

Downhill and gravity racing: Prioritising control and durability 

Modern downhill bikes are highly refined machines. A race bike needs to strike a fine balance between durability, stiffness and feel. With many elite riders choosing to strap lead weights to their bikes, it may seem like weight is not an issue, but it is. The trick is having the weight in the right places. You need a mountain bike that can absorb the big hits, that doesn’t flinch under heavy loads, and at the same time allows the pilot enough feedback for fine control in the critical moments. A championship-winning downhill bike is no longer a blunt instrument, but a finely honed race machine.

The key features of a race-winning mountain bike 

To understand how modern race bikes deliver all this performance, it can help to break down their features:

Understanding suspension: Hardtail vs. full suspension 

Maybe the first question you are asking is whether you need suspension? For downhill, the answer is simple: yes. If you are thinking of racing cross-country, then the question is more nuanced. It will depend on where you want to race and ride your bike. If your focus is on short-track racing or longer, less technical racing, then the low weight and incredible power transfer of a hardtail could be ideal.  

For Olympic format racing and more technical marathon races, we think a full-suspension bike is a great investment. At the World Cup level, very few elite racers still use a hardtail. The benefits for control, confidence and reducing fatigue of a full-suspension bike have become undeniable.  

You also need to remember that UCI rules state that you need to use one bike for both races if you are competing in short track and Olympic races. If you can only have one bike for the weekend, we think the benefits of full-suspension for the longer distance outweigh the slight weight and efficiency penalty for the short track.

Suspension travel: How much do you actually need? 

Cross-country racing is evolving rapidly, and the demands on suspension are greater than ever. This is why modern race bikes tend to have between 110 and 120mm of suspension travel, compared to 80 to 100mm just a few years ago. This extra travel will give you more composure and control in the descents and help reduce the buildup of fatigue towards the end of the race.

In downhill, the consensus is to run between 200 and 220mm of suspension travel. In the past, some bikes did have more travel, but it was found that with too much suspension travel, the bike became sluggish and slow to react. Around the 200mm mark is considered the ideal balance between big-hit performance and responsiveness.

Frame geometry: Balancing stability and agility 

Although there are very different demands in cross-country and downhill, the geometry trends are not so different. In the past ten years, the overall trend has been for all types of bikes to feature longer toptubes. This gives the rider more room to control the bike at speed. The angle the fork sits at, called the headangle, has become slacker, which helps increase stability at speed.

The height of the handlebars has gone up, too, called the stack, which creates a more commanding mountain bike riding position for technical descending. Stiffness, power transfer, and handling precision 

Stiffness is always at the top of our athlete’s request lists for their race bikes. To perform at the highest level, no matter whether it is downhill or cross-country, you need a bike with the right level of stiffness. For our cross-country athletes, the witchcraft comes in making a bike that is incredibly light, but still stiff enough to deliver the watts at the critical moment and deliver precise handling when the terrain gets rough.

For example, for the new Canyon Lux, we moved to a forged rocker link to drive the suspension. By doing this, we managed to make the bike more reliable, stiffer and lighter, all in one go. You will find this kind of attention to detail throughout the frame.

In downhill, it’s all about finding just the right level of stiffness. Make the bike too stiff, and the bike becomes harsh, and the rider will struggle to have enough feel to safely push the limits. Make the bike too soft, and the bike won’t stand up to the kind of forces modern downhill racing puts it through. The best frames dance this fine line, making bikes that are burly and stiff where they need to be, yet forgiving and sensitive at the same time.

You can’t make a championship-winning bike without working closely with athletes. You should ask yourself some simple questions before you pull the trigger on buying one:

  • Do you have the trails around you to get the most out of a bike like this?
  • Is racing really what you want to do?
  • Will your budget stretch to a dedicated race bike?
